You should perform visual inspection for makes, markings, labelings, packaging… as well as size measurement check.
Sweaters, sweatshirts and T-Shirts measuring guides
- Bust or Chest
Measure straight across chest, just below armhole, from side fold to opposite side fold. Be sure to extend centre back pleat and any folds under armholes before measuring. Some markers/designers/importers do measure 1 inch below armhole.
- Shoulder
Measure across shoulder from armhole seam to armhole seam at natural fold.
- Sweep/Bottom/Hem
Measure straight across sweep/hem/bottom from side fold to opposite side fold.
- Garment Length
Measure from high point of shoulder to bottom hem.
- Armhole
Measure from natural fold at shoulder along sleeve seam to bottom of armhole seam. But some inspectors measure straight across sleeve top to bottom of armhole binding( lowest point). So need to be specified it is curved way or straight way.
- Bicep/upper arm
Lay sleeve flat. Measure from sleeve fold at bottom of armhole, at right angle to sleeve, straight across to opposite sleeve fold. Some makers do measure down 1” from armhole.
- Elbow
Measure at half inseam as stated in No. 6 “Bicep”.
- Cuff Closed
Measure straight across cuff from sleeve fold to sleeve fold.
- Sleeve length from shoulder
Measure from top of sleeve head, at armhole seam, down sleeve to the edge of cuff.
- Sleeve length from side of neck
Measure from neck seam, at shoulder seam join, across shoulder and down sleeve to edge of cuff.
- Sleeve length from center back neck
Establish center back neck. Measure from this point across shoulder and down sleeve to end of cuff.
- Single Shoulder width
Measure from neck seam at shoulder join, to armhole seam.
- Across back
Measure from armhole seam to armhole seam at narrowest point.
- Neck circumference
Measure on relaxed seam from center back to front edge. Measure extended seam. Top of ribbing should extend similarly to extended seam.
