How to inspect garment appearance?

Garment appearance inspection is the inspection to the general appearance of a type of garments. It is the first step inspection for a shipment therefore it is almost the most important. Garment appearance gets the general idea about a shipment if it is good enough or bad. It greatly influences the judgement to the shipment, of course the general result. So it must not miss anything in the inspection.

Garment appearance must conform to available type sample, or design specification. A finished reference sample is the best way to compare with. However, in more occasions such a finished sample is not available except for fabric swatches or trims.

Garment appearance inspection in all respects such as

  • Fabric quality of weight, construction, feel etc.
  • Colours
  • Style
  • Applique, intarsia, darts, prints, embroidery where applicable
  • Components/accessories/trims
  • Measurements
  • Make-up

The general appearance must be symmetrical and clean. While all parts of the garments must serve the intended purpose.

  1. Facings

Must be kept deep enough to prevent rolling out and showing on front side.

  1. Front edges

Must meet within 1cm at hem.

  1. Stripe/plaid match

All centre front and centre back seems must match.

  1. Fabric defects/shading

No visible fabric defects or damages are allowed nor hidden defects which reduce fabric/garment solidity.

No shading is allowed within the same garment nor garment sets/coordinates.

The fabric construction must not be biased, i.e. also after washing the fabric, garment must not be distorted.
