Appliqué, derived from French, the meaning is applied. In other words, you can define Applique as the thing that has been applied. Applique is common both in garment design and ceramic design. In garment industry, it is the sewing technique in which fabric patches are layered on a foundation fabric, then stitched in place by hand or machine with the raw edges turned under or covered with decorative stitching. Appliqué is sometimes used to embellish clothing or household linens.

Most Appliques are in one piece. However, the definition of Applique can be different if you check it out in the ceramic industry. The primary ceramic will be decorated with a separate piece of clay as the Applique. Therefore in this article I will introduce how to conduct the appliques garments inspection.

Applique garments inspection

  • Appliques must be in correct material, shape, colour and position.
  • Appliques must have same shrinkage as base fabric.
  • Appliques must be colourfast.
  • The stitches around the appliques must be even and good.
  • Appliques must be well fixed, lie flat, not pucker nor bubble.
  • Appliques must be stabilized in knitwear if applicable.
