What tests should do to evaluate a surgical gown?

AAMI PB70/AATCC 42 Water Resistance: Impact Penetration on the critical zones and the front of the gown. Subjects a test sample to a stream of water and measures the amount of that penetrates through the fabric to a blotter paper. Garments that are more protective should have less water penetrating the fabric of test sample, which means, lower levels are better water resistance.

AATCC 127 Hydrostatic Water Resistance: applies water under pressure to one side of the fabric sample and determines the pressure at which droplets form on the other side of the sample, with a solid pressure adds speed rate.Garments that are more protective should be able to withstand higher levels of pressure before droplets form, which means, higher levels are better water resistance.

Visual Surgical Gown Inspection:

ANSI/ASQ Standard Z1.4:AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL4.0 for minor defects

Take samples at random from the lot and perform visual inspection for every surgical gown, inspect their makes and workmanship. Garments that are better makes should have less visual defects and both Major and minor defects are within AQL levels. Considering surgical gown, minor defects could be for a reference, will not result in a failure of inspecting lot.

Checklist for surgical gown:

  1. Cleanness: any kinds of stain either dirty stain or colour stain is a major defect
  2. Seam performance: any open seam is a major defect
  3. Velcro and cuff stitching: any broken stitching is a major defect, but run of stitching may be a minor defect
  4. Unsymmetrical sleeves: it is a major defect if over 2 cm, while between1-2cm is a minor defect.
  5. Size measurement: differs from normal garment, the size measurement tolerance is suggested +2/-1 cm, while +/-1cm tolerance is widely used in normal fashion industry.
